Hey guys! My
name is Mari Funabashi and I'm a first-year Japanese student! This blog is for
my Japanese class, and I hope that you (whoever you are) enjoy it! My father is
Japanese and my mother is Chinese, but I was never allowed to learn either
language growing up, as my parents were afraid that I would speak English with
an accent and be ostracized. But I've always wanted to learn Japanese since I
was little. My sister fulfilled her desire to learn Chinese in college, and now
that I'm in college, I'm finally taking Japanese! To say that I'm ecstatic to
learn Japanese is seriously the understatement of the year. I’m absolutely
thrilled to finally, finally (19 years in the making) learn Japanese. I don’t
know if it’s the thought of being one step closer to fulfilling my dream of
talking to Hayao Miyazaki or Joe Hisaishi in Japanese, the culmination of years
of watching anime, or simply visiting Japan and not feeling like a complete
outsider; but whatever the reason is, I’m finding Japanese a pure joy to learn.
Of course it’s definitely a challenge, as it’s my first non-Latin alphabet
language, but I’m relishing the simplicity of the grammar. The other language I’m
taking is German (my fifth year now), and for those who know German, the
grammar is pretty crazy. But I digress. I love Japanese and I’ll be writing
more posts! じゃ、また!
Thanks!
