Hello again!

Hey guys! My name is Mari Funabashi and I'm a first-year Japanese student! This blog is for my Japanese class, and I hope that you (whoever you are) enjoy it! My father is Japanese and my mother is Chinese, but I was never allowed to learn either language growing up, as my parents were afraid that I would speak English with an accent and be ostracized. But I've always wanted to learn Japanese since I was little. My sister fulfilled her desire to learn Chinese in college, and now that I'm in college, I'm finally taking Japanese! To say that I'm ecstatic to learn Japanese is seriously the understatement of the year. I’m absolutely thrilled to finally, finally (19 years in the making) learn Japanese. I don’t know if it’s the thought of being one step closer to fulfilling my dream of talking to Hayao Miyazaki or Joe Hisaishi in Japanese, the culmination of years of watching anime, or simply visiting Japan and not feeling like a complete outsider; but whatever the reason is, I’m finding Japanese a pure joy to learn. Of course it’s definitely a challenge, as it’s my first non-Latin alphabet language, but I’m relishing the simplicity of the grammar. The other language I’m taking is German (my fifth year now), and for those who know German, the grammar is pretty crazy. But I digress. I love Japanese and I’ll be writing more posts! じゃ、また!

One more thing! I’m a sophomore at Columbia University majoring in Music with a specialization in Composition! If you want to check out my work you can do it here: https://soundcloud.com/marifunabashi

Thanks!

  1. Mari-san! I'm being super nosy and procrastinating cleaning/working... your compositions are awesome! Somehow in all the class introductions I'd missed that you're a music major :)

  5. Hey Mari! It's so exciting to learn about your background behind your decision to learn Japanese. Actually, Miyazaki Hayao is my favorite as well, and he is one of the reasons why I was so enthralled to learn Japanese as well haha. With your diverse background in different cultures and knowledge in different languages, I think it will be a great help for your musical inspirations as well, and that is amazing. I'll listen to your music as well and がんばれ!! :)

  7. Hey Mari, it's so cool that you're culturally linked with the language you're taking! Are you considering doing a study abroad by any chance? I'm sure it would be an amazing experience for you not only to practice Japanese language, but to get even more in touch with your personal link to Japanese culture!

    P.S. まりのおんがくをききました! Awesome! :)

    1. Although I've never lived in Japan, I feel a very strong connection to Japanese culture. My family stayed in Japan when I was very young (around 2 years old) for quite a few months, but I don't really remember any of it. I especially really admire Japanese calligraphy. My father used to have a very beautiful calligraphy set with the ink stick and the stone grinder and the brushes. Also I love Japanese food. ときどきわたしわなっととごはんをたべます。とてもおいしいです。そしてうめとごはんをたべます。おおでしが、たかいです。One time my father bought a huge New Year's Obento! It had king shrimp and all different sorts of seaweed and pickles. It's one of the best memories I have of my father.
